Letter of Thanks from Chairman Mao Zedong to the Government Delegation of the Soviet Union

Dear Comrade Khrushchev and the Government Delegation of the Soviet Union:

At the time of the fifth anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Government Delegation of the Soviet Union, on behalf of the Soviet people, has presented to the Chinese people the machines and equipment necessary for organising a state grain farm with a sown area of twenty thousand hectares. During the period of organising the state grain farm and the first year of becoming familiar with its production, the Soviet government is prepared to send a group of specialists to the People's Republic of China to serve as advisers, so as to give China organisational and technical help in building and managing the state grain farm, and to enable the Chinese personnel directing the farm, together with the Soviet specialists, to master the technique and the methods of running a large grain farm in the shortest possible time. On behalf of the People's Republic of China and the Chinese people, I extend a warm welcome and heartfelt thanks to the Soviet government and people for this important, great and friendly aid.

There is no doubt that this state grain farm will not only play an important exemplary role in advancing the socialist transformation of Chinese agriculture, but will also help China train technical personnel in agricultural production and learn the valuable experience of the Soviet Union in opening up virgin and long-abandoned land. From this generous aid of the Soviet people, the Chinese people see once again the deep friendship of the Soviet people for the Chinese people and their concern and support for the Chinese people's cause of construction.

Long live the great fraternal friendship between China and the Soviet Union!

To Comrade Mao Zedong, Chairman of the People's Republic of China:

The Government Delegation of the Soviet Union has the honour to inform you that the Government of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, as a token of friendship, has decided to present to the Government of the People's Republic of China the machine tools and agricultural machines now exhibited in the Soviet Exhibition Hall in Beijing. A list is attached.

At the end is a further notice from the Soviet government delegation to Mao Zedong, addressed 'Comrade Mao Zedong, Chairman of the PRC', explaining the reason for the gift and attaching a list, comparable with the previous thank-you letter. The two texts are collected in one piece.

The letter says Soviet aid is not limited to machinery and equipment but also includes sending experts to China as advisers; the line 'Long live the great Sino-Soviet fraternal friendship' stands as a separate paragraph at the end. This piece's 1954 date comes from common cataloguing.
